Bass fiction and beat dimensions

To celebrate 1 year of Beat Dimensions concerts at the Bimhuis, we have invited three of our favourite musicians to perform live in Amsterdam. Kode9 & the Spaceape will demonstrate their Bass Fiction live set, a rhythmically desolate and sonically dense architecture of sub frequencies, whilst Dimlite will display yet again why he is a master of mosaic textures and imaginative drum patterns. Digikid Cinnaman and laureate Juha will play music from a not so distant future in the bar before, between and after the concerts.

Doors open around 11, and the concerts start at 11.30. We look forward to seeing you there.

We are very happy to announce our next Beat Dimensions night at the Bimhuis on 24 April 2009 with Kode9 & the Spaceape, Dimlite, Cinnaman and Juha.

Kode9 is one of the architects of dubstep, the slowed-down, mutated form of drum-’n-bass that surfaced in the London club scene. On his label Hyperdub the producer released a number of underground classics featuring the dark vocals of The Spaceape. The British duo is preceded by Dimlite (Sonar Kollektiv).

Saturday 21 June, the longest day of the year, Beat Dimensions will hold it down with L.A.’s finest producers Samiyam, Ras G and the Motherfucking Gaslamp Killer.

On recent editions BD invited Harmonic 313 (Warp), Dorian Concept (Nod Navigators), Flying Lotus (Warp) and Hudson Mohawke (Warp). The words of Steven Ellison before his first-ever abstract-experimental set as Flying Lotus in a seated venue that is home to the trio or the quartet. Not tonight. A crowd of some 400 twenty-your olds, drawn by the appeal of seeing these two prodigy Warp artists perform together for the first time in Amsterdam, caused havoc at the place so used to civilised discourse after a concert. Not this time. Aardvarck and Cinnaman, runaway cult figures from the 7,5th floor of a Spike Jonze film, meticulously murdered the crowd until 5 am with wonky, crunky and junkie bass and beats. FlyLo cameod like he ran the place; HudMo said «Ooops.»

Early 2007, Flying Lotus played in Amsterdam for the first time. This took place at the Paradiso, and was also organised by Cinnaman. The Beat Dimensions EP was released soon after that, and the rest is history.

Fortunately we have public radio in the Netherlands, and on that radio there are some very alert people – like Radna Rumping, now host of Future Vintage, then Benjamin hip hop journalist. It was Radna who interviewed FlyLo then. Listen to that interview here.

It might have taken us some time, but finally the BD family has a place of its own on the web. After the releases and events in the past year, we have decided to keep you more updated and involved on current developments in our dimension.

First up will be the extraodinary de-luxe Warp Records version at the Bimhuis on Friday 2 May with none other that Hudson Mohawke and Flying Lotus, supported by Cinnaman and Aardvarck. The week after will be one at the Flexbar on Saturday 10 May with Harmonic 313, U Dub and Cinnaman.
